Once again, it’s a bit of a personal choice thing. Red dari’s a slightly larger grain than millet, but has a much cooler name. It’s like a gang name. If you were called “Red Dari” in your friend group then you had a cooler name than the poor fucker that got called “Millet”, hands-down. Here’s the secret though: \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eRed Dari is only one of this little secret agent bastard’s names.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e It’s actually sorghum (sorghum bicolor), and god this gets into some conspiracy theory style shit because another name for it is “Giant Millet”. What a massive and awful fuck-you to millet, it just never ends.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe grain’s got a great selection of vitamins and minerals that you need to grow big healthy mushrooms, like B1 (thiamine) and B3 (niacin), you’ve also got your magnesium and iron in there which all helps. Phosphorus? Yup. It’s the right blend that’s going to make sure your mycelium has all it needs to produce some decent flushes once you’ve added this to your substrate. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn the non-mycological world, people use it for normal grain stuff, like making bread, booze, syrups, that kinda stuff due to the carbohydrate content. It’s basically the biggest jump in everyone’s mycology journey because it makes everything a million times more consistent, and it isn’t very difficult to use. However, people are sometimes still intimidated by it, or don’t want to spend any ‘extra’ cash when times are hard and they’d rather gamble their success than spend a little more, or it’s just seen as something a bit “extra”. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBut! It’s none of those things, agar is awesome and it’s your friend and now it’s cheap as all fuck - if you want to grow lots of massive mushrooms and have repeatable, predictable results, or even grow some of your own mushrooms from ones you’ve shoplifted from Tesco, then agar is for you! Want to make liquid culture? Buy some agar. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eYes, in an ideal world you’d be using a flow unit to do your agar work, but you can get by with a still air box if you need to (and that’s a clear box with two holes in so that’s not expensive either). You’d have a few more losses than if you had a flow unit, but even so your odds of success will be so much better with agar.
